Subterranean Voices, a five-week artist residency and exhibition by Sabrina Small that transforms the gallery into an immersive, hybrid space—part living studio, part evolving installation.

Visitors are invited to engage with Small’s completed works and her active creative process, encountering an environment rich with personal objects, vinyl records, and works-in-progress.

Rooted in themes of identity, transformation, and resistance to digital efficiency, Subterranean Voices explores the tension between outward persona and inner consciousness through hand-stitched and drawn works that celebrate slowness, tactility, and imperfection. Small’s symbolic figures—both monstrous and tender—serve as avatars for deeply personal narratives. This residency reflects SPAACES’ ongoing commitment to artist support, offering free residencies and exhibition opportunities that prioritize care, process, and artistic freedom.

Sabrina Small is a mixed media artist with an emphasis on drawing and stitching. Her artwork, inhabited by floral-animal-human-hybrids, speaks to the raw and grotesque nature of life on this planet. These personal representations are both autobiographical visual diaries and sensitive documentations of her past relations and life experiences.  Small earned her BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in Berlin, Budapest, Hamburg, London, Los Angeles, Mallorca, Miami, Nanjing, Philadelphia, and Stuttgart.  She currently lives in Philadelphia.
